What should a resume do for me?

All job candidates should have a resume to represent themselves to a potential employer in      order to compete in today's highly competitive job market.  A resume should outline the specific skills, experiences, and accomplishments that support your current employment objective or career goal.  In today's job market, your statistical odds of being considered for an attractive job are extremely low especially since an average job opening typically receives 200+ responses and an attractive job opening may receive a thousand.   If you want to be among those who are considered for the position you're seeking, you must have an attractive, properly formatted and well written resume that will sell you to the potential employer.

In what ways does an employer use a resume?

Employers use resumes to identify which candidate(s) will meet or fill their current needs.  The    process of elimination is often used since, as mentioned above, there are numerous responses received for a typical job opening.  Employers are very busy sorting through all these responses and will typically spend on average 15 to 20 seconds glancing over or scanning resumes to quickly decide which ones to eliminate and which ones to consider.  Therefore, it is critical that the top third of your resume is hard hitting and immediately captures the attention of the potential employer, otherwise your resume will wind up in the pile of trash, not making the first cut.  If your resume does make it into the pile for consideration, then it will be read in great detail.  Still again, the employer is still looking for a reason to eliminate you, so the overall strength of your resume is very important in this second stage of screening.  If your presentation is weak and lacks the crucial information the employer is looking for, you will not make it to the final selection and be called in for an interview.

If you have survived the elimination process and have been called in for an interview, your resume then becomes the basis for your interview and is used as an outline to discuss how you may fill the company's needs.  If you have a succinct, yet powerfully written marketing document to help represent you, you may very well get that job!

I have my own computer, and a resume book, should I prepare my own resume?

While there are many do-it-yourself books out there on writing resumes, the truth is that if you do your own, your resume is being prepared by an amateur. You can't just fill in the blanks, so to speak, from a book with your own information.  You need to know how to include the important selling points in your background into your resume and leave out unnecessary details. In other words, you have to paint the picture you want the employer to see.
